Virtual journeys via room service – by Marriott and Samsung

Ever found yourself dreaming of travel adventures to far-flung places to experience the culture, the sights and sounds of a new destination but just never got round to it or found that there just weren’t enough annual leave days in the year? Or they were just that, dreams?

Fear not. Now you can travel to 3 far off destinations from the comfort of your hotel lounge, bed or even bathroom courtesy of an innovative collaboration between Marriott Hotels and Samsung called VR Postcards.

Marriott captured 3 traveler’s journeys across the globe and turned them into adventure-inspiring virtual trips that their guests can now experience via Samsung’s Gear VR and Milk VR.

Guests can place an order via room service or Marriott’s mobile request App and be delivered a Samsung Gear VR headset directly to their room, on loan for 24 hours.

The guest can then choose between three specially created virtual reality postcards:

These adventures by three travelers were filmed using 360 degree 3D filming techniques by Framestore’s Virtual Reality Studio. Virtual postcard users simply put on their headsets and immerse themselves in the traveler’s adventure to experience the destinations as if they were really there in person.

Currently the three VR Postcards are available at selected Marriott hotels (New York and London) or via the Samsung Milk VR premium video service. But we’re sure more destinations and experiences are yet to come.

As the players in the hospitality industry strive to gain competitive advantage over their rivals we can expect further innovations to come. Check out Marriott’s Travel Brilliantly site.

And it’s not just hotels. Imagine such a service whilst on the aircraft giving you a virtual tour of what to expect, see and do upon touchdown at your dream destination.
