Have you ever asked yourself how many Apps you have hoarded on your smartphone over time and wondered how many you find really useful that you use them day in and day out? At last count, on a rainy Christmas Day, I had over 100 with everything from maps, public transport timetables (really useful ones I use every day) to games and events Apps that I rarely, if ever, use often.
As part of my “job” I download Apps all the time to see what’s new and how technology is ever present in our lives but they rarely make it to the list of Apps I use daily to help me go about my life. App overload and apathy sets in and I forget about, or lose interest in most of them. Particularly the ones that tend to be event based or time limit based.
A Belgian not-for-profit organisation, however, has turned this insight into something a lot more useful. Re-born To Be Alive has partnered with event companies and App developers in turning unused Apps into life saving mediums by asking them to allow an upgrade to their own Apps once they’ve passed their “use by” date to raise awareness of organ donation and giving their users the opportunity to sign up as an organ donor. Apps are not going to go away any time soon but I am reevaluating what is and isn’t useful to me and culling those Apps I don’t need. Believe me, for a hoarder, it’s not an easy task.
Hmm…now there’s an App idea?
